Time to stretch
Today (Sunday, 8th October 2017) is the day – our first real foray into the barging lifestyle, so, ably assisted by Bob and Jane, Nicki and I (and, of course, Milly and Casper) began a five day trip upstream towards Oxford.
Milly is still less than impressed with the idea of boating, and hides when she realises what’s about to happen, but eventually settles down (with the help of drugs and a Thundershirt), whilst Casper is his usual enthusiastic self and ready for anything.
We set off fairly early on our first day, and hung a right out of Harleyford Marina heading up to Hurley Lock and beyond. So far, so good.
Day one, passed though Henley and on to Reading for a spot of lunch and a chance to meet up with Lucy.
From Reading we headed up to Pangbourne and moored up for the night.
We had a quick walk into town for supplies and then headed on through the lock.
Jane had told us that Goring was where the gorgeous (Nicki’s word) George Michael used to live, so we moored up at Goring to see his house, which was still overflowing with tributes and flowers and messages. Quite amazing really when you consider how long its been since his death. Whilst we walked along the road alongside his property, we met George’s housekeeper who was busy tidying up outside, and had a quick chat with her before returning to the boat and moving on.
Just outside Shillingford we found our potential new home …. a house with a fabulous boathouse attached, just right for Shensi.
A little further along the river we found a delightful spot to moor up for night 2, just upstream from the house. So, so peaceful with lovely walking areas for the dogs.
Why is there a postal collection box just here? WHY????
