Nieuwpoort to Diksmuide

We set off up the river Yser to start our travels around Belgium in Shensi, and had a relaxing trip up to “The Trench of Death” at De Dodengang, an advanced post of the Belgium defence from WW1 where the Poulders were flooded to stop the German advance across Belgium.

On arriving at a bridge, we had managed to miss the sign with the number to phone for the bridge to be opened – we thought it was operated remotely – but after a while a man in the tower nearby seemed to wake up and we made our way though.  (It is not surprising if he had been asleep, as we were about the only ones on the river.)

Arriving at Diksmuide, we moored at a good location by the bridge, with a view of the museum (the tower in the background).  The 84 meter tall tower had been built as a memorial to the heroes of the battle of the Iser.

The town square is impressive to say the least ……….

(This is one impressive public toilet )

Dirksmuide was completely destroyed in WW1 and was rebuilt in the original style.

Take a look at the church below, the picture of its almost total destruction compared to how it looks now.
