Heading for Bruges
Heading off to Bruges, our plan was to stop at both Diksmuide and Nieuwpoortwe on the way, and so we found ourselves back in Diksmuide for the night (where we visited a great second-hand store and picked up some deck chairs – they should come in useful for all these social gatherings we seem to be getting involved in). Next day we carried on to Nieuwpoort this time for a couple of nights, mooring just outside of the main marina where we spent quite a bit of time cleaning and sorting out some DIY issues. All of this cruising was starting to get quite comfortable with quiet waters that were becoming familiar to us – having hardly encountered any other traffic I was now concerned that we could be hitting some busy waterways. Anyway, off we went on the Plassendale canal towards Ostende …. no other boats, just us although we did pass our friends on ESME later in the day.
We arrived at the lock for the Ghent Ostende canal and headed towards Brugge – still no other traffic! This is starting to get weird. I should not complain though as it is all rather pleasant.
Our target that night was at a free mooring just before the Scheepsdalebrug bridge on the edge of Bruges, so we were pleased to see it was available.
We spent Sunday hanging around the Scheepsdalebrug which is fascinating piece of engineering and pretty awesome when it tilts the whole road. We had arranged to stop here and meet up with Janos who is on a layover in Brussels, and spent a few pleasant hours with him, and later in the day we saw friends Chris and Diana go past in ESME.
