Tholen to Willemstad
We departed Wemeldinge about mid day and had a leisurely cruise to Tholen (established in the 13th century as a tollbooth on the Eendracht (a former branch of the Scheldt River that lay between the island of Tholen and North Brabant) The town’s name means the place where tolls can be charged), to be greeted by the friendly harbour master, Lydia. Moored up in the old harbour and had drinks in the yacht club overlooking the basin. Small town but with easy access to amenities. Had a relaxed walk around the fortification path, and looked round the shops before heading back.
Leaving Tholen, we cruised on to Willemstad (a city in the province of North Brabant, it is a small historical town with well preserved fortifications and lies on the Hollands Diep, close to the Haringvliet and Volkerak) where we moored up in the old harbour in the town centre.
A lovely location, very tranquil and pretty, within a fortified port where lots of the old gun structures are still in place. The town is surrounded by star shaped fortifications that you can walk round and look down on the town within its boundaries.
We came across a lovely old building, the Mauritshuis Museum, and inside were large rooms for meetings, weddings, etc., and all set up for a function the next day, but its piece de resistance was its attic filled with all sorts of oddities, well worth a visit.
These are just a few of the many, many, many photos Nicki took on that visit, but she decided to go back again the next day and took another batch of pictures of things she had missed the first time round.
We woke up on our second/last morning in this delightful location to a cold, windy morning, got ourselves all set and were off again to visit the Biesboche Nature Reserve for a couple of days.
