( Spakenburg. A Dutch village north of Bunschoten, Spakenburg is formally called Bunschoten-Spakenburg since its fusion with Bunschoten. The village lies south of the IJsselmeer in the municipality Bunschoten, Utrecht. )

Today we arrived in the historic town of Spakenburg whose major claim to fame is the restoration of historic Dutch barges, and found a nice mooring outside of the Havenkantoor’s office, with a large grassy area just right for the dogs, and spent two nights here (although fairly expensive and no services included). A short walk into the pretty little town, almost chocolate-box in itself, took us alongside the harbour area where the older dutch barges, tjalks, etc. are cared for and we could see the sheds where some of the work took place although it didn’t appear to be that we could actually look inside.

We had a stroll up and down the main street and Nicki noticed the Spakenburg museum which she decided to pop back to see later in the day – it looked as though it might be worth a visit and she did find it very interesting, luckily they provided an english guidebook to explain most of the exhibits so she was able to spend quite a while inside the various buildings.

Another point of interest was a walk alongside the Eemmeer, a nice long stretch of grassy paths where we could let the dogs off lead freely for a change. (The Eeemeer is a lake off the river Eem which contained the small island of Dode Hond where we had stayed earlier in the week.)
