Beez to Liege (9th to 11th September)
9 September – We anticipated that this would be a long day’s traveling, but I don’t think we were expecting it to be quite so long or so tiring – we set off about 10 from Beez and didn’t arrive in Liege until around 7 that evening!
Our route today took us from Beez along the Meuse, with a longish wait at the Grands-Malades lock (apparently named because that area used to be reserved for patients suffering from the Plague (or grand-malades), followed by yet another long wait at the next lock. From there we continued on to Huy with its imposing fortress overlooking the river, and stunning scenery. This left us with two more large locks both of which had long waits to enter, but finally we were out and on the final stretch and into Liege.
Finally we moored alongside the pleasure craft quay at Pont de Fragnee, but were somewhat surprised at just how very, very bumpy it was with wash from commercials in the main channel, and that went on till quite late in the evening. Still, once settled in it was off for a well-deserved walk for Casper who had been so patient all day.
