26th September – Leaving Leerdam in colder weather, we headed back along the Linge (a canalised river) onto the Merwedekanaal, arriving in Meerkerk a little under three hours later. There were several vacant moorings so we slotted in at the town end, stern on to the quay with a narrow, slightly bouncy jetty alongside (which made for a somewhat awkward on/off for Casper). The town seems fairly small, although we didn’t spend long enough there to really judge that, but there was a nice little bar/restaurant just round the corner from our mooring.

27th September – After a windy night on our mooring we moved on along the Merwedekanaal to join the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal and from there onto the Vecht, bypassing Utrecht, until we reached Maarssen, our destination for that night.

We had visited Maarssen last year, and it was just as attractive a town as we remembered, with waterways running through the streets. It certainly seems to be a monied area, with some fabulous properties along the river.

Nicki took off with Casper to stretch their legs, and they came across the grounds of the town hall (an 18th century manor house known as Goudenstein) with several groups of people dressed up in costumes, all just wandering around – she didn’t get to the bottom of why they were there despite asking around, but took a few photos of the experience ….

Town Hall

Bob and Jane also headed into the town to look around, and Nicki meet Bob on her way back and directed him to the town hall to see these strangly dressed people. On arriving back at the boat, she found me and Jane chatting to a local lady who was very interesting and a mine of information about the area.

28th September – Nicki set off with Casper for his morning walk and picked up some shopping on the way back, before we moved on to our next port of call, Nederhorst den Berg.
